What to Do This Spring in the White Mountains

Get a Glimpse at Some Moose

Driving down Moose Alley on U.S. Route 3 is a must to spot the large creatures. Moose frequently occurs along the road from the Route 3 and I-93 junction near Franconia Notch all the way to Bartlett Village on Route 302. That’s about 30 miles. Even if you aren’t lucky enough to spot one of these amazing animals, the scenic ride is a way to see the stunning landscape.

Hit the Trails

Spring is a great time to hike in the White Mountains. May is especially a favorite among avid hikers familiar with the area because it’s warmer. It’s typically the slow season, so you’ll feel like you have the trails to yourself. There’s also less foliage in the forests providing even better and more rewarding views. Waterfall hikes are also incredibly beautiful in the spring! Both the Mount Jackson and Mount Webster Loop and the Mount Willard Trail have lovely waterfalls along the way. There will still be plenty of snow so keep that in mind while you pack for your trip.

Attend a Local Event

Sugar Hill Lupine Festival

Late in the spring around the start of June, beautiful lupines can be seen blooming across the region. They brighten the White Mountains as the snow melts and the weather warms. Each year to celebrate the arrival of the flowers, Sugar Hill hosts an open-air market, the Sugar Hill Lupine Festival. If you can’t make it to the event, you can still see the blue and purple flowers around Sugar Hill and Bethlehem in early June.

White Mountain Bicycle Week: Bike For The Better

If you plan on visiting the White Mountains for some mountain biking, you need to visit during White Mountain Bicycle Week! The event is meant to encourage the community to get outside and exercise as well as raise money for local non-profits. Several rides and events occur across Lincoln, Woodstock, and Franconia Notch around Memorial Day Weekend.

Do Some Spring Skiing

Spring skiing is a beloved activity in the White Mountains! The mild weather in March and April may seem too warm to ski, but it creates some of the funnest conditions of the year. The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and there are fewer people on the slopes.
