Operating for over 150 years, The Cog remains an exhilarating journey through history, technology and nature. Located in the heart of the majestic White Mountains region of northern New Hampshire, it was the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world. With an average grade of 25%, it’s also the second steepest. A geared “cog and rack” mechanism and a trestle-mounted track system enable the train to easily and safely negotiate the precipitous grade and rugged, rocky terrain. The Cog offers 3-hour round trips to the summit, where you will have a chance to explore the summit of this beautiful mountain. Renowned as the home of “the world’s worst weather,” Mount Washington’s conditions at its 6,288’ summit are quite a bit different than those at the base station. Hurricane-force wind gusts occur on the summit an average of 110 days per year, but clear conditions reward visitors with unforgettable vistas from southern Quebec to the Atlantic Ocean 90 miles away. Alternatively, a 1-hour ride will take you to the Waumbek station. Located in an alpine meadow at roughly 4000’, clear conditions provide spectacular panoramic vistas from the southern Presidentials to the Canadian border. Passengers leave the train for about 25 minutes to enjoy complimentary hot refreshments, warming huts and a blazing fire pit. Round trips to Waumbek are roughly 1 hour, at reduced fares. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

• Trains run daily. Please check www.TheCog.com for schedule. Seats will be assigned on a "best available" basis.
• No discounts available for Steam trains. Please check www.TheCog.com for additional information.
• Steam trains will not be running to the Summit this season. The Cog Railway hopes to have them returning to the summit in 2026.
• Children under 4 may ride free on parent/guest's lap
• A $5/ticket handling fee will be added to all tickets

REFUND POLICY:

• Tickets canceled more than 3 months prior to the departure date are entitled to a complete refund. Please note that handling fee is NOT REFUNDABLE.
• Tickets canceled LESS than 3 months and MORE than 15 days prior to the date of departure are subject to a cancellation fee of $15 PER TICKET plus any online convenience fees.
• Absolutely no refunds will be permitted if a ticket is canceled LESS than 15 days prior to the date of departure. However, those tickets may be exchanged for a customer credit that can be used on a future excursion, subject to a move fee. Customer credits cannot be issued online– please call (800) 922-8825 or visit the ticket office in person.

• In the event that a train excursion is canceled or postponed, the Cog Railway will make every effort to contact every patron via e-mail or text, time permitting. Please check your e-mail/text messages on your scheduled day of departure for update.
• If the excursion is canceled, the ticket holder agrees that their only recourse is and shall be limited to a refund of the printed price on the ticket held.
